5 anti-ageing tips that you might not have known about

Looking for some lesser-known anti-ageing tips? We’ve got you covered…

Though we gain wealth and wisdom as we get older, we also gain wrinkles and crow’s feet.

It’s easy to lose your confidence and feel “past it” once you develop fine lines and wrinkles on your face, but it’s important to remember that ageing is a natural part of life. The chances are that you’ve searched high and low for a miracle cure that will “turn back the clock” in a couple of minutes, knocking twenty years off your face.

And you wouldn’t be alone: The anti-ageing products market is worth $14 billion in the United States, with the anti-ageing market in Europe expected to reach an eye-watering $19.14 billion by the end of 2025.

Though it’s always wise to exercise some caution when trying out new anti-ageing products and remedies, the good news is that there are some natural remedies you might not have considered. Below, we’ve rounded up anti-ageing tips many women don’t know about…

Say goodbye to the sun

There’s nothing quite like sitting in the sun drinking a delicious, ice-cold cocktail.

But the truth is that the sun is bad for your skin. Every time you expose your skin to the harmful UVB and UVA rays, you prematurely age your skin. It’s the same whether you sit on a beach, use a tanning bed, or try out any other indoor tanning equipment. UV rays accelerate the speed at which our skin ages, so the more sun exposure you have, the faster you’ll start to wrinkle.

Instead of tanning outdoors, switch to tanning lotions and make sure you’re covered up when you are out and about. As well as applying sunscreen regularly, you should cover any sensitive areas like your head and arms. However, you should be mindful of Vitamin D, and ensure you’re getting it, even when you’re not sitting in the sun. Deficiency in Vitamin D can result in conditions such as depression, muscle weakness, osteoporosis and cancer, and a new study has revealed that up to 80% of COVID-19 patients were deficient in Vitamin D.

Monitor your facial expressions

One of the most common causes of wrinkles is repetitive facial expressions. When you make an expression, whether you’re squinting, frowning, or smiling, your face contracts muscles under your skin, which, when done so repeatedly, cause permanent lines and wrinkles.

You can wear sunglasses and have an eye test to avoid squinting and be mindful of common facial expressions. Of course, we’re not saying that you should stop smiling or moving your face, but you should experiment with different expressions and consider light facial exercise.

Wash your face after a workout

We’re often warned about not wearing makeup when we’re working out, but did you know that it’s just as important to wash your face post-workout? Perspiration can irritate the skin and clog your pores. Washing your face with a gentle cleanser as soon as you’ve finished at the gym is a good idea. What’s particularly interesting to note is that sweat contains antibacterial properties, too. These can open our pores and clean whatever has been stuck inside of them. Think of a workout as a way to “flush” your skin of built-up toxins and grime. Recent studies have even revealed that sweat can kill bacterium like E-coli; pretty powerful!

Because of this, it’s so important to remove sweat and that excess grime from your face as soon as possible. If you’re not able to shower at the gym or before you get back to work, take a bottle of cleanser with you to use in the toilets, or use sensitive facial cleanser wipes. Remember to moisturise after cleansing to lock in hydration and avoid drying out your skin.

Bin skin care products that sting

When you apply a cleanser or lotion that stings or burns your face, it’s natural to write it off as “doing its job”. You might even enjoy that tingling sensation, assuming that the active ingredients are having a positive effect on your face. But the truth is that stinging, burning, warming, and tightening is bad: it means your skin is irritated. Using products occasionally or accidentally won’t harm you. But when used consistently, they’ll agitate your skin and make it look older than it really is. Using the wrong skincare products can lead to premature ageing.

Dermatologists say that the right skincare products won’t cause any sensation. If you are feeling an unusual tingling or burning sensation, it means you’re disrupting your skin’s barrier, which can result in wrinkles, redness, acne, and bumps. Bin those harsh creams and listen to your skin – if it burns, it’s calling out for help! Use natural skin care products instead.
