We’ve rounded up some anti-ageing tips for men to help you stay looking younger for longer.
Nobody wants to look older than they really are.
For most men, however, neglecting their skincare regime and thinking they’ll look young forever means they often collect more wrinkles, dull eyes, and bags than their female counterparts.
The good news? There are ways that you can slow down the ageing process.
Whether you’ve spotted your first grey hair, noticed a fine line in the mirror or your years of partying are starting to take their toll on your face, making some simple changes can help you to turn back the clock and look like you’re in your 30s when you’re actually pushing 50.
Below, we’ve rounded up ten of the biggest anti-ageing tips for men to help you out.
Limit your alcohol
We all know that alcohol is bad for us. Not only is it a depressant and full of empty calories, but it can accelerate the production of free radicals, which damage your body and cause you to age prematurely. Alcohol can also dehydrate you, pulling water from your body and drying out your skin, and it can slow your brain, weaken your immune system, and keep you awake at night; all contributing factors to premature ageing. Stick to a Diet Coke and an early night!
Learn to relax
With so many pressures from work and home life, it’s hard not to be stressed nowadays. If you don’t combat that stress, though, you can cause lasting damage to your skin, so make sure you take the time to hit the gym, have a nap, and spend some quality time with the kids.
When we’re stressed, our bodies release stress hormones which can break down collagen, cause inflammation, and reduce our ability to repair damage, meaning you’ll be more likely to suffer from wrinkles and breakouts. Know when to take a breather; Frankie Says Relax!
Take cooler showers
Though long, hot showers are a great way to unwind after a busy day in the office, they’re bad for your skin, stripping it of natural oils and drying you out. Cut down your shower times and opt for a lukewarm temperature instead; it’s better for your body and the environment.
Wash after working out
Before you finish at the gym, hit the shower. Not only will it make you feel more refreshed and get you ready for home or the office, but showers are good for removing dead skin and oils that can clog your pores and make them larger. The sooner you wash after a workout the better – take a cleanser to remove sweat and skincare product build-up in your pores.
Cut down on sugar
It would be impossible to get through life without a Krispy Kreme from time to time, but cutting down on sugar is one of the best ways to stay looking younger for longer. Sugar can cause inflammation, leading to acne and other skin conditions, and encourage wrinkled and dehydrated skin. Cut out the soft drinks, sweets, and coffees and opt for a low-sugar diet.
Sleep in your boxers
Used to slipping into a pair of PJs before bed? Consider stripping off! Wearing too much in bed can stop your body from cooling down, which will limit the release of the human growth hormone (HGH), which burns fat, repairs your bones and skin, and helps to build muscle.
Researchers have found that around 70º Fahrenheit is the optimal sleeping temperature – that’s around 21º Celsius – so stick to your boxer shorts and keep yourself cool on a night.
Say no to straws
We’re already waging a war on plastic straws, but rather than switching to paper and metal alternatives, sip from the glass instead. Sucking from a straw can create more fine lines and wrinkles around your mouth, and those are amongst the hardest to reverse or conceal.
Grow a beard
Whether you’ve got a double chin, ageing skin or sagging jowls, growing a beard is a great way to conceal your imperfections and make you appear younger – or, at least, smarter. In fact, a recent survey from The Journal of Evolutionary Biology found beards demonstrated masculine social dominance, making men more attractive than their shaven counterparts.
Visit the sauna
Just finished a session at the gym? Make the most of your membership by spending half an hour in the sauna before you go home. Science has shown that saunas can lower your blood pressure by dilating blood vessels, which can reduce your risk of heart disease and keep you in great shape. What’s more, the heat from saunas encourage collagen production (great for smoothing out your wrinkles) and sweating removes bacteria from pores.
Moisturise
If you’re pretty new to self-care, you might be surprised to learn that men are spending more than women on beauty treatments, on average £3,366.35 per year. Not quite ready for a spa day and a facial? Start off with some basic skincare: moisturising your skin every day.
Dry skin not only causes flaking and redness, but it can accentuate fine lines and wrinkles and make you appear older than you really are. Opt for a cheap fragrance-free moisturising lotion (popular high street brands in the UK include Bulldog, Nivea, Elemis, and L’Oreal) and apply on a morning, an evening, and whenever you take a shower to keep your skin supple.
Try Oralift
If you’re serious about anti-ageing but don’t want to go under the knife, then the Oralift facial rejuvenation treatment could be an option to consider. Our natural alternative to Botox involves a small mouthguard device, worn for short periods of time.
