How to keep your brain young and slow the ageing process

How to keep your brain young and slow the ageing process

We’ve put together some tips on keeping your brain young and slowing the ageing process…

At Oralift, it’s our mission to help women rejuvenate their faces and look younger, without having to go under the knife.

One thing we don’t talk about as often is how to feel younger.

The two are very different.

Though reversing the signs of ageing will no doubt make you feel good about yourself when you look in the mirror, your mental state must also be rejuvenated in order for you to feel younger overall. And there are significant help benefits to the latter.

According to a new study in The Washington Post, mindset is equally as important as health when it comes to living longer.

Put simply, if we feel young, our natural ageing slows down.

This is backed up by the Columbia Aging Center at Columbia University. They suggest that mental ageing isn’t just about the physical changes – the grey hair, the fine lines, the crow’s feet – but also the mental changes, and the good news is that we can control those changes.

Their study found that, when we refuse to accept negative stereotypes about ageing, we can protect our mind from ageing prematurely. In a trial with 100 men and women in the United States, those who believed that age was just a number showed better memory performance.

So how do you keep your brain young and slow the ageing process? Below, we’ve rounded up some tips to get you into the right mindset and live a more fulfilling and youthful life…

Fake it til you make it

We all have those days where we wake up and feel particularly old or frumpy. We should acknowledge and work through those emotions, but it’s also a good idea to “fake it til you make it” and put on a smile and think positively, even if you’re not in the mood to do so.

Research shows that smiling, even if you’re faking it, can reduce stress and make you feel happier in the long-run. Those who smile are also perceived as looking younger than their actual age, and we all know that frowning can cause deeper lines and wrinkles over time.

Practice that smile in the mirror and keep it up. Even when you’re faced with obstacles and challenges, try to focus on the positives and, eventually, you’ll become a happier person.

Spend time with friends

Your friends and family can keep you feeling young and healthy. According to a recent study, loneliness is a bigger killer than obesity, with social isolation increasing the risk of premature death by as much as 50%. Surround yourself by those you hold close, and you’ll feel young

Research shows that those with strong social connections are less likely to be obese or suffer from inflammation or high blood pressure. You’ve got no excuse: it’s time to put on your best frock and host a gathering, or head to the cinema to watch the latest blockbuster!

Get intimate

Dr David Weeks, former head of old age psychology at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital, told The Telegraph that having sex regularly can make you look and feel younger than you are.

Experts recommend getting intimate around three times per week so your body can boost circulation and release endorphins that will make you feel fabulous. Not only will you feel more confident, but you’ll grow closer to your partner, which in turn makes you feel younger.

Sex also encourages the release of the human growth hormone, which can make your skin more elastic and help to reverse some of the effects of ageing. Time to head to the bedroom!

Buy a dog

If you’re a dog person, you’re in luck. According to a recent study at Uppsala University, owning a dog can make you live longer. Bringing home a four-legged companion can reduce your risk of mortality by as much as 33% and reduce your chances of a heart attack by 11%.

That’s because dog walkers are typically more active, taking their pooches out for regular exercise, but also because dogs increase wellbeing and social interaction. Dogs have even been linked to improving their owners’ bacterial microbiome, though research is ongoing.

More of a cat lady? Fear not: partake in regular exercise and make a conscious effort to see friends and family regularly. Oh, and talk to your puss: it’s the social interaction that counts.

Start studying

One surefire way to take you out of your comfort zone and make you feel like a teenager again is to start studying. And you don’t need to apply to a university, either; with so many great free courses online, you can develop skills from the comfort of your home, challenging yourself with quizzes or starting your own blog or YouTube channel to share your progress.

Taking a class and developing your skills will keep your mind active and help you see things differently. If you’ve yet to retire, it can even send you off onto a new career path, so decide on something that you’re passionate about, put on your reading glasses, and get to work!

Spend time outdoors

Though anti-ageing experts often advise against too much sun exposure, spending time in the great outdoors is one of the best ways to feel young and alive. Sunlight encourages our bodies to produce serotonin, which is a natural mood booster, so head out into the garden to top up your tan and soak up some rays. Just remember to wear a high-SPF sunscreen first.

If your budget doesn’t quite stretch to a five-star retreat on the Caribbean this year, don’t worry. You can still enjoy the sun by reading a book in the park, going for a walk in your shorts and a t-shirt, or opening the windows and doors in your home to bring the outdoors in.

Nobody wants to feel old. By making an effort to alter your mindset, you’ll keep your brain young and slow down the ageing process. Pair that with the Oralift anti-ageing device, which reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and crow’s feet without surgery, and you’ll look and feel ten years younger in no time! Stay tuned for more anti-ageing advice soon.
