4 wrinkle prevention secrets you need to know about

There’s no getting away from the fact that, as we age, our skin begins to wrinkle.

Women have been experimenting with anti-ageing treatments and masks for hundreds of years in an attempt to hold onto their youthful looks.

In fact, historians recently discovered that anti-ageing treatments were being developed in India as far back as 5,000 years ago.

Wanting to turn back the clock and look young and healthy isn’t a recent invention!

According to a report in The New York Times, 28% of under 25s regularly worry about ageing.

That figure increases to 42% of those aged between 25-34, and 54% of those aged 35 and above. Though there’s no “miracle cure” to ageing, there are some things that you should know if you want to prevent wrinkles and stay looking baby-faced forever…


Antioxidants are your friend

As we enter into our twenties, our bodies produce less and less collagen, and therefore it’s critical that we do everything we can to slow down the skin’s ageing process. One of the best techniques is to start using anti-ageing products that are rich in antioxidants, like serums containing Vitamin C or products that are packed with AHA (glycolic/lactic acid).

Antioxidants not only protect your skin against environmental damage which is caused by free radicals, but they can reverse the effects of skin damage and prevent wrinkling.

They also remove dead skin cells in our faces, helping to revitalise deeper layers of skin.

Products containing antioxidants and AHAs are available over-the-counter and can give you a natural “oomph”. Be careful if you suffer from sensitive skin and always speak to a dermatologist before changing up your skincare routine, or you could induce breakouts.


The sun is your enemy

Sun damage is, without a doubt, one of the primary underlying causes of skincare worries and premature ageing, so avoid unnecessary sessions on the sunbeds and always wear an SPF moisturiser to protect your skin from harmful UV rays – even in the winter months.

You should see sun cream as a must-have in your handbag and daily skincare routine.

Make sure your cream protects from both UVA and UVB rays (think of A as ageing and B for burns), and choose a cream that offers at least SPF 30. By shielding your skin from the sun, you’ll not only slow down the ageing process but reduce the chances of cancers.

There are, of course, benefits to sunshine; it can reduce the chances of Type 2 diabetes, boost your immunity and prevent vitamin D deficiency. It can also reduce your cancer risk (vitamin D is known to reduce the risk of several cancers and increase survival rates once cancer has been diagnosed), lower your blood pressure and improve your mood and sleep. Sunlight can also aid weight loss, slow Alzheimer’s, improve bone health, cure depression, and prevent Seasonal Affective Disorder.

We’re not saying you should avoid the sun at all costs – but be mindful of its potential damage and limit your exposure to one or two hours per day, wearing an SPF 30+ cream.

It’s important to note that retinol should not be used if you have underlying skin conditions like rosacea or eczema, as it could enhance inflammation. If you do have sensitive skin and want to try retinol, slowly introduce it to your skincare regime in small doses. Apply a pea-sized amount to your skin every two or three days on an evening before going to bed.
