Surprising things that can lead to premature facial ageing

Surprising things that can lead to premature facial ageing

We all know bad diets, prolonged exposure to the sun and drinking too much alcohol can add years to your face, but they’re not the only causes of premature ageing. As we get older, many of us become increasingly conscious about the way we look and look for new solutions to take years off of our faces.

Below, we’ve rounded up some of the surprising things that could be causing you to age before your time. The good news? They’re easy habits to break.

The chances are that you spend at least some of your free time on Instagram and TikTok, and taking the odd selfie or two to share with your girl pals. But if you’re selfie-obsessed, you might want to change your ways. Puckering your lips can age the skin around your mouth, so if you’re used to pouting for selfies, opt for a more natural look when you’re next in front of a camera.

According to one report, the average person takes an eye-watering 450 selfies per year, and a separate report found that taking selfies can lower your confidence whilst increasing anxiety levels, so if there’s ever been a better time to quit Instagram, it’s now!

Chewing gum

We all like to chew gum from time to time to help freshen our breath when we’re out and about, but if you’re a constant chewer, we suggest putting it down once and for all and considering more natural alternatives.

Indeed, some dermatologists argue that chewing gum can lead to lines and deep furrows around the mouth due to the repetitive chomping motion, so instead, drink water to keep your breath fresh or carry around a miniature mouthwash.

If you’re a jet-setter and love to spend your time on sunny beaches or exploring new lands, your face will likely suffer. Although you might feel like you’re in a protective bubble when you are cramped in your seat on an aeroplane, you could actually be exposing yourself to more UV rays than you might have first thought, so slap on some sunscreen before you set off.

It’s also important to remember that your skin can dehydrate at altitude, which can make it look dull and wrinkled, so drink lots of water during the flight and find a good moisturizer containing hyaluronic acid, which is known to serve as a protective barrier and keep water in!

Using a straw

We’ve been conditioned not to use plastic straws to protect the environment, but if you want to go one step further and futureproof your skin at the same time, ditch the straw entirely and drink straight from the glass. Sipping drinks through a straw can lead to more fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth, as you’re repeated pursing your lips.

It’s also worth noting that the same can happen when you drink from bottles, so instead, choose a glass or a cup where possible, and consider a flask for on-the-go hydration. Your face – and the planet – will thank you for it; in the United States alone, 500 million straws are used every single day.

Not replacing your pillow

The general rule of thumb is to replace your pillows every 1-2 years. According to the experts, you’ll know it’s time for a replacement when your pillows don’t provide enough support. Holding on to that old pillow is not only bad for your back, but it won’t do any favours for your complexion either. Lumpy, uncomfortable pillows can lead to a more wrinkled face, so instead, find a quality pillow on the firm side, and choose a silk pillowcase that will reduce the chances of ‘sleep lines’ forming. Brands now sell crease-resistant pillowcases for that exact reason, and an added benefit is that your hair stays super smooth!
